Stands for Graphical User Interface. It is a program that allows you to use the computer's graphics to make tasks easier to use.

Application Software


Programs that are designed for end users and includes database programs and spreadsheets.

Algorithm


A series of steps that help you solve a problem.

Virus


An unauthorized program or code that is loaded onto your computer and makes it stop working.

Universal serial bus (USB)


An external data bus that holds data that can be transferred into the computer. It is also a plug and play.

Uninterruptible power supply (UPS)


A device that allows you to still use your computer, for a short time, when the original source of power is lost.

Troubleshooting


A series of steps in which help you check the problems your having with your computer.

Surge protectors


A device that helps protect the computer and other electronic devices from spikes in electrical power by regulating the power that comes from the power supply.

Serial Ports


An interface, that transmits 1 bit at a time, that connects an external device to the computer.

Plug and Play


A device that works as soon as you plug it into the computer.

Parallel Ports


A channel, that transmits more than 1 bit at a time, that connects an external device to the computer.

Modem


A device that transmits digital data so that a computer can receive information from other computers that are linked to a telephone line.

Hackers


People who gains unauthorized access into someone's computer, usually to gain access to that computer's information that they want.

Firewall


Any computer program that prevents hackers from getting access into a person's computer.

Plug and Play vs. Installation

Plug and play allows you to work right away on a task as soon as you plug the device on the computer. As for the installation that is required to configure controls, setting jumpers, and other complicated tasks you have to wait for the computer to read it and process it before actually using the software.
